My First African Encounter

Until last December, I’d never been to any African country. So when I got the opportunity to visit three –Senegal, the Gambia, and the Cape Verde Islands – on an HX Hurtigruten West African cruise, I seized it.

The cruise would be a chance not only to visit some new-to-me destinations but, more important, to explore a part of my Caribbean heritage that, until relatively recently, I hadn’t considered.

Would I feel some sort of kinship or connection when I touched down? Would “my people” recognize me? Would Africa feel like “home?”
